About
Cervine makes heavy music for listeners willing to follow it somewhere unexpected.
Based in Dubuque, Iowa and rooted in the Driftless region of the Midwest, Cervine moves between crushing heaviness, melody, vulnerability and expansive passages that draw as freely from jazz, psychedelia and experimental music as they do from metal. The band cites touchstones including Tool, King Crimson and Black Sabbath, while individual influences stretch from Acid Bath and Mare to Frank Zappa, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Pink Floyd, The Cure, Grateful Dead and Duke Ellington. Rather than separating those influences into obvious stylistic detours, Cervine works to make them coexist within a single musical language.
That sense of contrast is also rooted in the band's surroundings. The Driftless landscape spans Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois—a place of dramatic bluffs and old architecture overlooking towns marked by a much rougher economic reality. For Cervine, the beautiful and the damaged exist side by side, becoming a subconscious part of the band's musical identity.
The name Cervine grew from guitarist Matt Hohmann's recurring dreams involving deer and his fascination with the animal's symbolism as a guide on spiritual journeys. Around the same time, Hohmann became fixated on images of deer scraping velvet from their antlers against trees—images he found simultaneously beautiful and brutal. The name became an apt metaphor for music intended to take the listener somewhere while refusing to make the journey comfortable.
Cervine brings together musicians whose histories have crossed for decades. Hohmann and drummer Matt Wenzel first played together in high school and later performed in the extreme-metal band Smothering Angels. Vocalist Shawn Healy and Hohmann collaborated through the improvisational drone/free-jazz project Venereal Crush and other recordings, while bassist Tim Knautz entered the circle after years spent on the same regional musical radar. The current lineup is Hohmann on guitar, Wenzel on drums, Knautz on bass and Healy on vocals.
Hohmann begins much of Cervine's material on guitar before bringing structured demos to Wenzel and Knautz. The trio then pulls the music apart and rebuilds it collectively in the rehearsal room, exploring different arrangements until the instrumental composition feels complete. Healy adds lyrics, melodies and vocal harmonies before the full band grinds through the material again. The standard is deliberately simple: if they weren't the ones making the music, would they still want to listen to it?
Cervine released its self-titled debut in 2019, followed by Liminal Entity in 2024. Both records were recorded, produced, engineered and mixed by Hohmann in his home studio with production input from the band. Brad Boatright of Audiosiege mastered the debut, while Troy Glessner of Spectre Studios mastered Liminal Entity. The band is currently writing its third record.
After emerging in 2019 and playing throughout the region before the pandemic shutdown—including shows in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin—Cervine is now focused on expanding beyond its home territory through festivals and support opportunities while continuing to write and record. For Hohmann, that work has become something deeper than promotion or career strategy: Cervine is something he feels compelled to make.
Cervine isn't interested in becoming background music. The point is connection: music that has been labored over, music that rewards attention, and music capable of leading an audience somewhere they didn't necessarily expect to go.
Short Bio
From the Driftless Region surrounding Dubuque, Iowa, Cervine is a progressive metal quartet whose music draws from doom, psychedelic rock, stoner rock, and jazz. Moving between heavy, riff-driven passages, atmospheric textures, and intricate rhythmic arrangements, the band embraces a wide range of influences while
maintaining a distinctly progressive foundation.
At the heart of Cervine's s sound is a fascination with contrast. Dense, distorted passages give way to spacious arrangements; hypnotic rhythms evolve into unexpected shifts in tempo and intensity. Rather than relying on conventional song structures, the band allows its compositions to unfold organically, building tension through intricate musicianship, layered textures, and an instinct for dynamics.
